Poothadi is a village and present Head quarter of Poothadi Village is at Kenichira, It is in Wayanad district in the state of Kerala, India.[1]
Demographics
[edit]As of 2001[update] India census, Poothadi had a population of 14849 with 7445 males and 7404 females.[1]
History
[edit]It is believed that the Name "Poothadi" is derived from the word "Bhoothadi", and the ancient name of Poothadi was "Bhoothamadikotta" which means this was a place (Kotta) where "Bhootha Ganas" of Lord Shiva hanged and played. There is an ancient Shiva-Vishnu Temple complex at Poothadi. It is also believed that the name Poothadi is derived from the word "Poothappadi", which is mentioned in the epigraphic records found near Mariyamman Temple Sulthan Bathery.
Notorious Abduction
[edit]Poothadi village filled the national headlines when the communist activists abducted Mr. V.N.Sasi of the Congress party to retain their rule in the village administration. The abduction came a few days before the communists were facing a no-confidence motion against their elected president. Mr.Sasi originally won the election on a communist ticket but unscrupulously shifted to the congress party after winning the election. The abduction became very sensation in the backward district of Wayanad and people even blocked the road at Kenichira. The division bench of the Kerala highcourt directly intervened in the issue. According to the police, a vehicle was hired in Meenangadi town and used for the abduction.[2]

Those who are coming from Kannur and Coorg District of Karnataka Madicari-Kutta etc. can reach Poothadi through Mananthavadi - Panamaram - Nadavayal-Kenichira.
Those who are comming from Bangalore, Mysore, Gundilpett, Ootty, Goodalloor etc can reach via Sulthan Bathery-Beenachi-Moonanakuzhi- Kolery- Kenichira
The nearest railway station(97km) and airports is at Kozhikode. Through Kannur and Bengaluru airport also can reach Poothadi. Distance from Airports: Kozhikode International Airport-97 km, Kannur International Airpor 116 km.and Bengaluru International Airport-318 km.
